Tomorrow morning the University of Dundee’s Tower Building will be the centre of a national protests against cuts in higher education across Scotland.

Staff and students from across the country are invited to join the picket line from 8 am tomorrow morning in a national effort to protest against cuts being made across higher education.

In a social media post, Students Against Cuts (SAC), who operate as a University of Dundee-centred organisation, said that:

“Though Dundee has been at the forefront of the crisis in higher education, it is not unique to our city. Almost every university in Scotland has faced cuts in the past two years.

We must show that the whole of Scotland supports the striking workers, but also, we must build student/worker solidarity across the country”.

The past week, the Dundee University and College Union (DUCU) branch took their case directly to the Scottish Parliament and were joined by students and staff alike, including those from Edinburgh UCU, who at Edinburgh University are facing job cuts.

Interim Principal Nigel Seaton has spoken of a ‘moral obligation’ to see through this current redundancy process in a dispute resolution meeting with DUCU in the past 2 weeks. However, the pressure of a nationally centred protest provides a significant step in seeing this change.

Further discussions between striking staff and the University’s executives have taken place in the last few days; whether the combination of the two will see a dramatic change in stance from the University will only be revealed in the reaction to the protest tomorrow.
