Petitions and action to stop the closure of beloved institutions and crucial programmes have begun to surface.

This comes after Dundee University announced measures to save £20m annually.

The following petitions are now live:

One supporter of the petition said:

“As a family we have been going to the Botties (as we call it) for 30+ years. It is a wonderful place of genuine peace (despite Riverside and the Airport).

“To lose it would be criminal and another chipping away of the culture of Dundee. Does nobody learn anything about this City?

“The stuff that has been lost over the decades is extraordinary and, actually, as far as I am concerned, cultural vandalism of the highest order. It has to survive.”

The group calls for immediate action “to secure its future as one of Scotland’s most vital spaces for contemporary art and critical discourse, directed by a women of colour.”

Jenny Brownrigg said:

“This cannot be allowed to happen. I fail to see how the university can meet with any public engagement expectations with funders such as Scottish Funding Council, when Cooper Gallery and Botanic Gardens are on the list for closure.

“Cooper Gallery is such a well respected programme, locally, nationally and internationally, which has repeatedly through the quality of the programme and audience bringing so much to the city and beyond. It engages with a sphere that the university cannot do otherwise through quality and reputation.”

One Philosophy students said:

“Hearing the news of the Philosophy Programme being cut was devastating. We hope to rally enough support to revert this current decision as this loss will leave a huge hole in the university and Dundee, and would only lead to greater loss down the line. 

“The staff have all helped us through philosophical discoveries and problems, new avenues and connections, and become the passionate philosophers we are today and will be.”

The petition seeks to reverse the proposal.

Other key cuts include the Chaplaincy and Languages.

Students have began to circulate open letters in opposition to these large cuts.
