Students were surprised to find a University building’s roof swarming with Police this afternoon, with some officers bearing what appeared to be firearms.

They had taken positions upon the roof of the main campus library, with around 10 officers total observing the area. Most officers were seen peering through binoculars, looking towards Small’s Lane, whilst at least one specialist armed police officer looked down the sights of a rifle.

Tánaiste, DUSA President, said “I was surprised to look outside my office window to find police snipers opposite on the roof. This should have been communicated in advance.

“Given the announcement of cuts yesterday, the lack of communication was an unwelcome surprise today.”

A University spokes person later identified the police activity as a training exercise, they said “We regularly have Police Scotland on campus for training, but appreciate this has been very visible and may have caused alarm.”

Despite this, many students theories came through, the most popular being security for some sort of VIP.

By coincidence, First Minister John Swinney was in Dundee today, but it is not known whether this was connected.

One student suggested that if this had been announced prior in an email, the drama surrounding the situation could have been avoided.

Police Scotland were contacted by the Jute Journal but refused to comment.
