In a statement to the Jute Journal, the owners of Sandy’s bar stated:
“When we found out Dr. Fortune [Gomo] was local to us, and it literally happened on our doorstep, we thought it was the right thing to do to try and raise a little bit of money for the family during this difficult time and to show local support.
We did not expect it to be so overwhelming – the support and generosity has been phenomenal!
“We just wanted to let Dr Gomo’s family know they are in our thoughts, and as a community they have our full support and love during this difficult time in their lives!
This is not what Dundee is about.
However, the response that we have received is what we are all about, we stand together, and we see each other through difficult times, and hope that this small gesture gives the family some comfort at this time.”
It is important now more than ever that we come together and reject this horrific and senseless violence that has no place on our Dundee streets, or anywhere else for that matter.
No one should live in fear of violence or discrimination, and it is important that we all continue to call out racism and misogyny when we see it.
Our hearts are with Dr. Gomo’s family and friends, and everyone affected by this tragedy.
