A vigil was held at the Caird Hall in memory of a recently graduated PhD student from Zimbabwe who was attacked on Saturday, leading to her death.

The police are now treating the incident as a murder enquiry.

The senseless daylight assault has shocked the community of Dundee.

Reports have identified the victim as Dr. Fortune Gomo, who was in her thirties, and say that she was walking with her 10-year-old daughter, who witnessed the attack.

The alleged assault occurred on South Road yesterday, July 5th, at around 4.25pm. Emergency services were called but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Scotland have confirmed that a 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody.

Police are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the incident to come forward and contact them on 101 quoting incident number 2283 on July 5th 2025, or to reach out anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

A vigil allowed people to attend and pay their respects. It ended with those in attendance marching and chanting “Justice for Dr. Gomo!”

In remembrance of Dr. Gomo, DUSA President Tánaiste Custance said:

“We grieve for one of us. Dr Fortune Gomo will not be forgotten. DUSA will stand by her family and support the swift application of legal justice. We will release a statement shortly.
